Cleaning Hacks: Clean Stairs Like A Pro

Unless you’re one of the very few people in the country that hoovers their stairs on a daily basis, your carpeted treads are probably showing a few signs of wear and tear. If your stairs are currently looking a little dull and dirty, these easy cleaning tips will help you to restore them to their former glory in no time.

Step One: Start From The Top

When cleaning a staircase, it’s important you always begin from the top. Start from the bottom and you’ll find some of the dirt and debris your clear from the higher treads will fall onto your freshly cleaned carpet.

Step Two: Loosen Stubborn Dirt

As stairs are a high traffic area, it’s very common for dirt and debris to be trodden into the steps. If some members of your household often forget to take their shoes off before going upstairs, this stubborn grime can be even tougher to shift. Use a stiff brush to loosen this resistant dirt and debris from the carpet fibres. If your carpet hasn’t been cleaned for a while, you’ll need to use a fair bit of elbow grease to get those steps clear.

Step Three: Remove Pet Hair

Cat and dog hair gets everywhere. If you have pets in your home, your staircase is probably covered in a fine layer of fur. To remove this fur, put on a pair of marigolds and then vigorously rub your gloved hands over the carpet. The pet hair will be attracted to the rubber and it should come away from the carpet in clumps.

Step Four: Give It A Vacuum

Once you’ve loosened all of the dirt and debris trodden into your carpet and collected up the layers of pet hair, it’s time to crack out the vacuum cleaner. To help you get into all those nooks and crannies, use one of the machine’s smaller attachments. Although this will take you a little longer, it will ensure every crack and crevice of your staircase is clean and clear by the time you’re done.

Step Five: Lather It Up

If you’re just giving your staircase a standard spruce up, you can now go and put your feet up and enjoy a well-earned cup of tea. However, if you want to go all out and really bring your stairs back to their former glory, it’s time to crack out the carpet shampoo. You’ll need to shampoo each step individually and work the lather into all of the corners and uprights to ensure every inch of carpet is cleaned. Once the shampoo has done its work, pat the steps dry using an absorbent towel or hoover them using a wet/dry vacuum.

Step Six: The Final Vacuum

Last but not least, give your staircase one final vacuum to help fluff the carpet fibres and remove any last traces of dirt. Wait until your staircase is completely dry before you hoover the steps for the last time for best results.
